India: Centre's largesse helps states cut fiscal deficit in '05-06

After years of operating in relative obscurity, it has become a market force, buying and selling household names such as the Somerfield supermarket chain and the foreign exchange group Travelex. In 2005, private equity firms bought around one in every three of the companies sold in Europe, according to Citigroup - up from 2000 when they purchased just one in every 20. Reports emerged last week that private equity firms were stalking BT, which would be the biggest buyout ever.
